This is an ADS show.  Our show will be held inside, at the Spokane Valley Mall, in front of J C Penney.

The Mall is located in the City of Spokane Valley, East of Sullivan, on Indiana.

 *Staging and setting up for the show is - Friday, August 18th at 9:00 P.M.  It is available all night, until 7:30 A.M., for staging.

BRING YOUR CELL PHONES TO CALL SECURITY TO GET ENTRANCE TO STAGING AREA.

Judging will begin Saturday, August 19th - at 8:15 a.m.

PLEASE ALLOT YOURSELF AMPLE TIME FOR  STAGING AND CLEANING UP YOUR STAGING AREA. 
NO FLOWERS WILL BE ALLOWED FOR JUDGING AFTER 7:30 a.m.  THERE WILL BE NO EXCEPTIONS,  PLEASE.


**From 7:30 - 7:45, Clean-up of staging area must be done before judging,

if there are no volunteers to help with this task.

Viewing of the show is free.  The show hours are:

                  Saturday-10:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M., Sunday-11:00 A.M. - 2:00 P.M.                 

A NEW LEVEL HAS BEEN ADDED - YOUTH - AGES 5-18 
YOUTH LEVEL EXHIBITORS MUST BE A MEMBER OF A DAHLIA SOCIETY TO SHOW.  

THIS IS THE SAME RULE FOR ALL LEVELS .


RULES AND INSTRUCTIONS - READ ALL INFORMATION - PLEASE:

1.  ENTRY TAGS MUST BE FULLY AND CORRECTLY FILLED OUT, TOP AND BOTTOM. IF NOT COMPLETED THOROUGHLY AND CORRECTLY, THE ENTRY COULD BE DISQUALIFIED. 
     A.  ALL TAGS MUST HAVE THE FULL NAME OF THE DAHLIA, AND CLASSIFICATION, AS PRINTED IN THE CLASSIFICATION BOOK.  NO ABBREVIATIONS, SUCH AS: 
H H FOR HOLLYHILL. SOME COLOR DESCRIPTIONS CAN BE SHORTENED. 

     B.  THE SAME INSTRUCTIONS, AS IN 1-A, FOR THE EXHIBITORS NAME.  DO NOT USE INITIALS.  POSSIBILITY OF NO AWARDS/PRIZES WILL BE GIVEN IF TAGS ARE NOT FILLED OUT CORRECTLY  AND COMPLETELY, TOP AND BOTTOM.  
     C.  IF TAGS ARE APPROVED BY THE JUDGES CHAIR FOR A CORRECTION, THEY MUST BE CORRECTED ON TOP AND BOTTOM OF TAG. TOP AND BOTTOM TAGS MUST MIRROR 
EACH OTHER.

     D.  PUNCHES MUST BE PUNCHED IN EXACT SPACE. DO NOT PUNCH HALF ON 1ST AND HALF ON  SECOND, ETC.  AWARDS COMMITTEE CANNOT ASSUME WHAT THE CORRECT PUNCH IS. NO AWARD CAN BE GIVEN IF IT IS NOT PUNCHED CORRECTLY AND EASY FOR ALL TO SEE WHAT THE PUNCH SAYS.

2.  Single entries:   Section (Class) 1-19 - Only one entry per Class 1-5 ( Lots 1-6 you may enter as many lots as you would like) and one only one entry per Classes 6-19, per exhibitor.
3.  There will be a Best of Show Single Bloom awarded.
4.  Sweepstakes for Single Blooms Section (Class) 1-19, will be awarded to Youth, Novice, Amateur and Open levels.  You will need to win at least 3 blue ribbons, (1st place ribbons), to be in the running for Sweepstakes.
5.  Sweepstakes for Arrangements will be given.  Read Rules in Arrangements - Section #21
6. There will be an ADS Seedling Bench.
7. Triple entries are excluded from this, due to space limitations, other than the ADS Seedling Bench.

8.  See Special Class Section -20, for :
     a.  Flower of the Year- Hollyhill Black Beauty.
     b.  People's Choice
​     c.  1st. 2nd and 3rd year seedlings classes, etc.
​9.  Laciniated Dahlias do not have a separate class in this show.  You must show them in their size/lot class.
10. Judges may not make changes, on entry tags, without permission from the Judges Chair or the exhibitor.  Any changes made must be made on the top and the bottom
of the tag.  Clerk should write the changes with the  Judges direction.  Get permission from Judging Chair before any changes are made on tags.  Check your classification books, also.  The team must, also, agree on the change.
11. If entry is in the wrong class/lot, after judging has started, you can attempt to find the exhibitor to move the  entry.  If unable to find the exhibitor, then the Lead Judge can move it to the proper class/lot.  If that class has already been judged,
 the entry will be set back and no award given. 

     a.  PLEASE MAKE SURE THE NAME AND CLASSIFICATION ARE CORRECT, SO THAT YOU CHOOSE CORRECT PLACEMENT ON THE JUDGING TABLES.
      b . THE FLOWER NAME AND CLASSIFICATION MUST BE WRITTEN AS IT IS IN THE CLASSIFICATION  BOOK.
      c.  DO NOT USE ABBREVIATIONS OF THE FLOWER NAME - EX: H H FOR HOLLYHILL.  YOU MUST WRITE HOLLYHILL.
      d.  DO NOT USE INITIALS FOR YOUR NAME, THE EXHIBITOR.  EX: P. BENTLEY OR P E B.  PLEASE USE COMPLETE NAME, SUCH AS,
  PAT BENTLEY

​      e.  IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU FOLLOW ALL OF THESE INSTRUCTIONS ON BOTH THE TOP AND THE BOTTOM OF THE TAGS.  IF TAGS ARE NOT CORRECT, THIS COULD BE REASON FOR SETTING EXHIBIT BACK AND NO AWARDS GIVEN. IF ANY CHANGES ARE MADE ON THE TAGS, NO MATTER WHAT IT IS,  BOTH THE TOP AND BOTTOM TAGS MUST BE CHANGED.  TOP AND BOTTOM TAGS MUST MIRROR EACH OTHER. 

12.  NO JUDGE SHALL JUDGE ANY CLASS IN WHICH HE/SHE HAS A SPECIAL INTEREST, SUCH AS, RELATIVES, YOURSELF,  SPOUSE, SIBLING, SIGNIFICANT OTHER, ETC.,  but shall step aside until judging of such class is complete.  No exceptions.  The entry will be disqualified and no award  given, if this happens.
​13. Youth, Novice, Amateur, and Open, will use the four digit ADS classification numbers for Class 1-19: 
Lots 1-6, Flower of the Year, and anywhere else noted.
14. Exhibitors cannot make more than one entry per lot or class, unless, otherwise specified.

15. ​Husband and wife must enter in the same level, which ever is higher.
16. All dahlias must be exhibited in container supplied by the IEDS, except for the arrangements, bouquet, water bowl, and basket classes.  All baskets must have handles. Use your own clear water bowl for that class.  No greenery allowed.

17. Due to space limitations, please use a smaller size container, vase, basket and water bowl for staging your arrangements, etc.
18. Artificial support, for blooms, above the container is prohibited.
19. All dahlias shall be entered as classified in the latest ADS Classification Handbook of Dahlias, 2017, or Composite, if not in classification book.  Read your classification book and ADS Bulletins for all other changes made to classifications.  Make changes in your books, so that you know what the changes are for judging purposes.
20. **Exhibits entered incorrectly and placed on tables incorrectly can be disqualified.  (You need correct color of tags for your skill level and class entered.)  Fill out tag completely, top and bottom.
21. Named ADS varieties only, when entered into competition in ADS shows.
22. Disseminated dahlias, when entered as classified into competition, in ADS Shows, will not be disqualified, nor will they receive a prize/award or penalty points for being over sized / undersized.  The dahlia bloom will be judged on it's own merits or lack of.
23. Undisseminated dahlias my be entered in show against classified Dahlias for one year, only.
24. In Classes 1-19, dahlias must be displayed with, at least,  one set/pair of leaves on the stem, set as evenly across from each other, as possible and disbudded.  Leaves cannot be placed touching the foam or container.  This could be cause for no award given.
25. Exhibitors shall keep their exhibits fresh and in show quality condition for judging,  Making sure there is plenty of water in the container.
26. The Show Committee reserves the right to reject any entry.  The Show Committee may, also, make additions or changes in the rules, which are deemed necessary for the proper conduct of the show.  Any rules so made, shall  be as binding as though they were a published part of these rules. (They may not alter the judge's decisions.)
27.  A second award may given by judges when an entry is considered unworthy of a first award.  All blooms shown in competition, including blooms in baskets and bouquets, must have been grown by the exhibitor. Arrangements are the only exception.
28. The society will exercise all possible care of exhibits and containers, but will not assume any responsibility for s or damage.  You must put your name and phone # on the bottom of the container.  Do not assume the show  committee knows who the container belongs to.  Please try to pick up your own belongings after the show has  ended.  It is not anyone else's responsibility, unless you have made arrangements with someone else.
29. Judges will not move arrangements.  Make sure your arrangement is placed in the correct class/lot on table. Arrangements will be judged, only if, they are in their correct Class/Lot.
​30. READ YOUR CLASSIFICATION BOOK FOR ALL OF THE RULES ON SHOWING SEEDLINGS IN OPEN AND ON THE BENCH.  THOSE RULES MUST BE FOLLOWED OR THE ENTRY WILL BE DISQUALIFIED.  
31. Only named dahlias can be classified by senior judges.  Limit of only two per exhibitor, unless, arrangements are made ahead of time.  They can only be judged after the senior judge/s have completed their staging and staging area is cleaned up.  Dahlias must be classified
 
two hours before judging/clerk meeting.  It is preferable that you make arrangements for classification, of unclassified dahlias, ahead of time, if at all possible. Everyone is busystaging,  including judges.  They can only classify if they have time and their  staging is complete and their staging space is cleaned up.
32. All staging areas must be cleaned up before judging can begin.  Let's all pitch in with this task.

3.  Arrangements must be entered in the class appropriate to the theme.  All classes are interpretive.
4.  ​Accessories and Embellishments are allowed where specified.

Judging Scale for Arrangements and Bouquets:

Color Harmony      20 points
Expression             20 points

8.  The same rules apply as previously documented for Sweepstakes ties.
9.  Container/vase should not overwhelm the arrangement.  The focal point should be the dahlias.

GLOSSARY:  Accessories and embellishments are to play a very small part in the arrangements design.

a.  Accessory - Anything added to a design, other than, plant material, container, base, background, or  mechanics.  Accessories are subordinate to the othe elements of the design. 
b.  Dominant - The stronger effect of one or more of the elements in the design.  Dahlias must be dominant in all classes.

c.  Embellishment - Any artificial addition to additional plant material that changes the plant material's appearance, such as paint, glitter, and etc.

Use White Tags and American Dahlia Society 2017 Seedling Bench Evaluation.  Offered in cooperation with the American Dahlia Society.  Open to all exhibitors.  Show officials and exhibitors must read and adhere to the rules for entries and judging as printed in the 2017 ADS Classification and Handbook of Dahlias.
